Our approach to the Science curriculum

The science department at St Augustine's aims to provide a balanced and diverse curriculum (following the national curriculum) which provides our students with both science and career capital, this is enriched by the Catholic Ethos of the school. We recognise that a number of our students do not have aspirational goals and we aim to address this in our curriculum delivery. Our curriculum is intended to give the students a love of the subject, good science currency and the knowledge and skills to progress with science beyond GCSE level. We use a sequencing approach which builds on prior knowledge with increasing cognitive demand. The curriculum is both stretching and ambitious whilst being accessible to all students, pupils will be valued and encouraged. Experimental science is at the heart of what we do as it provides a memorable and enjoyable aid to learning. We aim to imbed recall of prior learning into our teaching to enable pupils to know more and remember more. We will enrich our curriculum using real contextual learning experiences and develop opportunities within the curriculum, inspiring pupils by linking science skills and knowledge to our unique coastal geography and communities.

Teachers are aware of the Pupils in their class who have special education needs and adapt their teaching to meet their needs as outline in their Education Health Care Plan. High quality teaching that is differentiated and personalised will meet the individual needs of these pupils.
